About Dr Hettige
What better way to learn than from the minister of health himself in Sri Lanka?
From childhood, I have believed that there is nothing I cannot do. I was always inventing and experimenting—not content simply to follow the path everyone else did. As a boy at Ananda College, I wasn’t the highest performer in most subjects. I didn’t enjoy sitting still and memorising things. My mind wanted to ask why, how, what if. Then, when science entered the curriculum (around Grades 6–7), everything changed. Suddenly the world made sense: the logic, the investigation, the creation. I found that I could excel—not by rote learning—but by understanding and doing.
I built makeshift “drones” (attaching a small fan to a motor and cylinder) long before drones became common; I took on my tutor’s failed orchid-culture project and succeeded at age 18 by developing one acre of tissue-culture orchids on my father’s land in Mataramulle; I started that orchid business while still a teenager. This creative spirit carried me through my medical education and beyond.
Today, I serve as a Consultant Family Physician and Honorary Senior Lecturer at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo in Sri Lanka’s premier medical training institution. I hold board-certification in Family Medicine and have been deeply involved in medical education and research for decades.
In parallel with my clinical work, I launched a journey of invention and entrepreneurship. Among my proudest accomplishments:
• The discovery and development of papaya-leaf extract as a therapeutic for dengue fever—leading to patented products, and backed by clinical trials showing increased platelet and leukocyte counts.
For this invention I was recognized for as the Winner of the Presidential Prize for Best Invention in 2013 (Sri Lanka)
• Invention of a device-embedded hat with antibacterial/antiviral surface protection (patented in Sri Lanka).
• Founding and building the brand Oil of Dermae: A dermatological skincare line developed by myself, manufactured and distributed globally, especially targeted at stubborn dry skin and palmar-plantar keratosis.
Awarded the World Organization of Family Doctors (WONCA) South Asia / Regional Five-Star Doctor Award in 2024.
ECO-TOURISM
In additon to owning and operating multi-sector enterprises: estates (tea, rubber), I also run a tourism resort (“Eco Jungle Hideout” on a 15-acre Mediterranean-forest property) which also have won awards for their environmental friendly maintenance , manufacturing of herbal medicines and cosmetics, and a luxury-apartment rental business.
My current research interest lies in the frontier of ageing: Do we have to age? How can we meaningfully delay or modulate biological ageing rather than just chronological age? In my clinic and research I compare patients’ chronological age with their biological age, and explore what practical and novel interventions make a difference.
In short, I am not only a medical doctor—I am a creator, an entrepreneur, a researcher, and a teacher. I continue to innovate, build, and serve.
